Robert J. Matthews

Robert J. Matthews, 92 of Mogadore, N.Y. passed away unexpectedly in Batavia, NY on December 8th, 2025. He was predeceased by his parents, William and Marie Matthews, his brother, William Matthews and his sister, Jeanine.

Bob and his wife of 73 years, Margaret “Peggy” McAllister Matthews built their home in Mogadore, where they raised their 5 children together.He is survived by his wife and children; Daniel (Karin) Matthews, Michael Matthews, Sheryl (Jeff) Watkins, Scott (Tammy) Matthews, JoAnne (Tom) McInerney, as well as his nephew and niece, Gene Davis and Margaret Davis; Bob was a proud grandfather to 17 grandchildren and was blessed with numerous great-grandchildren, all of whom brought him tremendous joy.

He retired from the New York State Thruway Authority, where he worked as a dedicated highway foreman in both Batavia and Henrietta. In retirement, Bob found great happiness in the outdoors and enjoyed working with heavy equipment, plowing, mowing and digging in the dirt with his Kubota tractor. He loved playing horseshoes and was proud to have been a National Champion.A competitive spirit followed him throughout his life—he was an avid euchre player who often said with a smile, “Lord hates a coward” while calling trump! Bob also enjoyed dogs, watching tennis and playing ping-pong.

Bob will be remembered for his humor, his steady presence, his love for family, and the countless memories he created with those fortunate enough to know him.

Family and friends are invited to a Celebration of Life on Friday April 10, 2026 from 4:00-7:00PM at the Holy Name of Mary Parish Hall 8656 Church St, East Pembroke, NY 14056.
