Richard F. Mazur

Richard F. Mazur, 95, of Batavia passed away peacefully on Friday July 24, 2026 at the Gateway Home in Attica. Our Dad was born on July 26th in the year 1930. A son of a Polish Immigrant farmer John and his lovely wife Katarzyna. Including his parents, Richard is predeceased by his beloved wife; Barbara (Schum) Mazur; sisters Irene, Marion, Helen  and Mary Ann and 3 brothers Joseph, Walter, and John; grandsons Glen William Kruger and Dillon Hale.

He was born and raised in the Hamlet of Linden in the town of Bethany in the county of Genesee. He never let us forget where he came from and who he was the son of. He went to school from grades 1st through 8 in a one room school house located right next door to his home. He attended and graduated from Alexander High School. He entered the United States Air Force at the age of 18 with his best buddy and lifelong friend Alan Jensen.

When he got out of the service, he worked many jobs. But he finally settled with the New York Telephone Company where he met the love of his life, Barbara Schum. He worked there for 39 years!!! In addition to working his day job at the Telephone Company he would come home for dinner, take a quick nap, and then go to his second job as a security guard at the Batavia Downs Race Track. When he retired from the Telephone Company he went to work for the County as a mower. He would get up at 5 am, mow for the Genesee County Highway Department. he tended a large vegetable garden out on Ellicott Street Road He grew squash, sweet corn, sweet peas, string beans, tomatoes, onions, peppers, and sun flowers. But his most prized possessions were the pumpkin seeds that he ever so carefully chose for his grandchildren who would eagerly come out and plant, watch them grow, and pick them just in time for Halloween!

He and our Mom raised 7 beautiful children, had 19 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren!!! They loved them all and were so proud of each and every one of them. He loved our Lord and every Sunday and Holy day you could find him at St. Mary's Church with one or more of our family, left side of the Church, 7 pews back. That was his seat.Richard is survived by his loving children; Susan (Jerry) Mazur Fortunato of Endicott, NY, Janet Mazur of Leroy, Randall (Ann) Mazur of Indian Land, SC, Nancy (Nicholas) Ficarella of Churchville, NY, Diane (Larry) Hale of Batavia, Bradley (Lisa) Mazur of Batavia, and Andrew (Deanna) Mazur of Murfresboro, TN; sister Rose Sheelar; He is also survived by his adoring seventeen grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.

There will be no prior calling hours. A 9:30AM Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday July 30th at Resurrection parish 303 E. Main St. Batavia, NY 14020. Mr. Mazur will be laid to rest in St. Joseph’s Cemetery.
