It is with sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Mattlene Gibson Smart, who entered eternal rest on February 21, 2026. She passed gently at the home of her loving daughter, Cathy, in Chesnee, South Carolina, surrounded by the comfort of her family.
After a prolonged illness, Mattlene's loved ones find solace in the unwavering belief that she is now cradled in the arms of her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, restored to wholeness in spirit, mind, and body. For all who shared her faith, there is deep comfort in the promise of a joyful reunion one day.
Born on December 12, 1938, in Bickmore, West Virginia, Mattlene was the middle daughter of five daughters born to William Dempson Gibson and Mattaline (Mattie) Gibson. As a teenager, Mattlene’s family relocated to Western New York. It was there that she would lay down deep roots, dedicate herself to raising her family, and spend the majority of her adult life, leaving an indelible mark of love and devotion on all who knew her.
Mattlene’s enduring legacy lives on through her family. She is survived by her two dear sisters, Jeri Fleming of Chesnee, South Carolina, and Arlene Gibson of Ocala, Florida. Her other two sisters Lorene Shamblin and Elenor Johnson, both of Oakfield, New York passed away last year.
She was a loving and nurturing mother to her four children: Marsha Ely of Fort Myers, Florida; Shirley Liles (Don) of Fort Myers, Florida; Cathy Nash (Jeffrey) of Chesnee, South Carolina; and Floyd Leonard Smart of Rochester, New York. She also embraced with love her stepson, Raymond Smart of Batavia, New York. Her spirit will continue to shine brightly through her seven cherished grandchildren: Jennifer Liles, Jerrica Liles, David Liles, Casey Riddle, Robert Nash (Sideria), Spencer (Maddy) Ely, and Colton (Whitney) Ely. Mattlene was also blessed with the joy of twelve great-grandchildren.
