Dr. George E. Gurrant

On Sunday, October 11, 2026, at the age of 79, Dr. George Gurrant passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family. Born in Monroe, New York, to the late George H. and Viola D. Gurrant, George lived a life enriched by family, friendship, education, athletics, and a lasting commitment to others.

George was an exceptionally gifted athlete, excelling in baseball, football, basketball, and track & field. In high school, he played on four varsity teams, demonstrating an extraordinary level of athleticism and competitive spirit. He continued playing Varsity basketball at Orange County Community College, where his team earned a place in the Junior College playoffs.

While completing his Bachelor of Science in Education and Master’s degree at Brockport State College, George was a member of the record-setting 4 x 110 relay team in track & field. His natural talent, determination, and dedication to athletics opened the door to extraordinary opportunities, including the 1964 Olympic trials in the hurdles while still in high school and a tryout with the New York Jets after college. His athletic accomplishments reflected not only his remarkable ability but also the discipline, perseverance, and passion he brought to everything he pursued.

Following college, George began his teaching career at LeRoy Central School District, where he dedicated 32 years to educating and inspiring students. He primarily taught Health at the middle and high school levels and coached Varsity football and track & field. Throughout his career, he developed lasting friendships with colleagues who remained an important part of his life long after his retirement.

George left an enduring legacy at LeRoy Central through his genuine sense of humor and innovative lessons. Students held him in such high regard that multiple yearbooks were dedicated to him, an honor that filled his heart with gratitude. He was also awarded the University of Rochester Teacher of the Year and selected as a recipient of Who’s Who Among American Teachers. These recognitions reflected the meaningful difference he made in the lives of his students and the respect he earned throughout his career.

George also served as head football coach at York Central School, where he dedicated several seasons to sharing his love of the game, contributing to the program, and building strong relationships with fellow coaches and players.

A lifelong educator with a passion for travel and learning, George led more than 20 international educational trips to Europe. These experiences gave students and adults alike the opportunity to discover new cultures, broaden their perspectives, and create memories that would last a lifetime. In addition to his teaching and coaching career, George earned his Ph.D., specializing in HIV/AIDS education and root cause analysis, further demonstrating his commitment to learning and making a difference.

Above all, George’s greatest joy in life was his family, of whom he was immensely proud. He was a devoted husband to his wife of 43 years, Elaine, and a loving father to Jennifer Gurrant and Elizabeth Gurrant, as well as his daughter, Danielle (Joseph) Shirley and son, James (Wendy) Gurrant. His love extended to the next generation, and he cherished his role as “Papa” to his three granddaughters, Kailey (Lane) Brown, Emma Falk, and Erin Falk, and his grandson, Blake Kines. He was delighted to welcome his great-granddaughter, Blair, into the family this year.

George is also survived by his beloved brother, Gregg Gurrant; his cousin, V. Brooks Carter; his lifelong friends of more than 70 years, Randy Roberts, Ed and Sandy Leonard; his sisters-in-law and brother-in-law; and many cherished nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews.

Whether through sports, travel, education, or simply spending time together, George found joy in supporting those he loved, sharing his knowledge, and creating lasting memories. He will be remembered for his accomplishments, his dedication, his humor, and his gentle yet profound presence. His legacy will live on in each life he has influenced, and in the family he has loved so dearly.
