With deep love and gratitude, we announce the passing of Donald P. Derk, who left this world on February 3rd 2026 at the age of 87, after brief health complications. His life was long, rich, and full - marked by love, laughter, and a generosity that touched everyone who knew him.
Born on August 24th, 1938, in Hazelton, PA, Don grew up in a loving home with his parents, Paul and Mary (Fedyna) Derk, and his younger sister, Carole. Over the years, he built a life rooted in hard work, family, and faith, and he carried those values into everything he did. Don served in the United States Army before graduating from Mansfield State University. He later moved to Batavia, NY with his first wife, Jan (Rogers) Derk, with whom he shared two daughters. After Jan’s passing in 1976, Don devoted himself wholeheartedly to raising and supporting his girls.
Don dedicated much of his life to teaching, a calling he embraced with passion and purpose. Throughout his career as a math teacher within the Batavia City School District, he was known for his patience, creativity, and enthusiasm. He believed deeply in the power of education and was sure to instill that belief in his children and grandchildren.
Don was a devoted father and grandfather, and nothing brought him more joy than spending time with his family - enjoying both the conversation and the food at any gathering. He had a natural gift for making others laugh, always lightening the room, and was never too proud to be the subject of a good-natured joke. Don found great fulfillment in volunteering within his community, being an active member of his church, and seeking adventure—whether biking, skiing, playing tennis, kayaking or traveling the world. Most recently, Don traveled to Hungary, Italy, Croatia, SE Asia, and Costa Rica.
Don is survived by his sister, Carole (Charles) Rubenstein; daughters, Jennifer (Alan) Smith and Melissa (Joseph) Vanelli; his grandchildren, Jordyn (Anthony) Vanelli-Pladas, Malory Vanelli, David Smith, Maranda Vanelli, and Sarah Smith; and his great-granddaughter, Audrey Pladas. Don was also the proud step-father of Eric (Paula) Sears, Cheryl LeClair, Kevin (Penny) Sears and “Papa” of Eric, Adam, Hunter and Lilly. He was preceded in death by his parents and his loving wives, Jan (Rogers) Derk, who passed in 1976 and Janet (Bluman) Derk, who passed in 2020.
Though our hearts are heavy, we are comforted knowing that Don lived fully and loved deeply. His legacy lives on in the stories we tell, the lessons he taught us, and the countless lives he touched.
