Derek P. Genesky passed away on Saturday, June 14 after a short battle with cancer.
Born in Oakfield, Derek resided on Kingsbury Avenue in Batavia with his wife Elizabeth (Balbick) Genesky for nearly fifty years. Aside from his college years at St. Bonaventure University, he was a lifelong Genesee County resident.
Derek graduated from Oakfield-Alabama High School in 1970 before completing his degree in Journalism at St. Bonaventure in 1974. He spent his early career in sales at the Batavia Daily News and as a car salesman, subsequently working at the Batavia Walmart for 20 years.
He was a loving husband and father, raising his two children Geoffrey and Lauren together with Elizabeth at their Batavia home. Derek enjoyed sports, music, and classic movies, and was always eager to share the latest trivia he learned from his voracious reading. He enjoyed reminiscing about his days quarterbacking the Oakfield High School football team and college days with friends at The Rathskeller, but was equally a curious person who liked to learn about people and places far from Batavia. He was on one hand a quiet and considered person, but also one who enjoyed a boisterous conversation when something or someone sparked his interest.
He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth Genesky; son Geoffrey (Jessica Matlin) Genesky of NJ; daughter Lauren Genesky of Buffalo; a granddaughter, Lake Genesky; siblings Martin Genesky of GA, John (Terry Agro) Genesky of Kenmore, Bruce (Patricia) Genesky of MI, and Donna Genesky of Kenmore; in-laws Robert (Jane Marzolf) Balbick of Batavia, Ron Metz of Batavia, Nancy (Edmund Schichtel) Balbick of Akron; along with a number of nieces and nephews.
He is predeceased by his parents, Robert and Dora (Nanni) Genesky, and his sister-in-law Mary Anne (Balbick) Metz.
